Why Do Halbertcicles Grow?
Saying how Halbertcicles form does not address the question of why
they form so frequently and large at my house. The question of why Halbertcicles
have formed so much in my freezers is a fun question because we get
to make up whatever we want.
I make up lots of different things. You are invited to do the same.
In the end, Halbertcicles do not mean anything except what we make them
mean. Basically, Halbertcicles are a mirror.
Halbertcicles are not unique to me. From time to time I talk to someone
who says they have had Halbertcicles grow in their freezer on occasion.
Though I have never found anyone who reports seeing the size and peculiarities
that have graced my home.
There was a time in 2004 when I was at my friend Brooke’s house.
She bummed out about something and when I told about the Halbertcicle
phenomenon, she said she wanted one to grow for her. We put in two trays
of ice cubes and then watched a movie. One Halbertcicle grew while we
watched the movie.
I like it when that happens.
However, I do not believe that I have any special power to make this
phenomenon happen. To my way of thinking, going in that direction is
an ego trap. It yields the sour fruit that comes from a false self-aggrandizement.
For all you kids reading this, that just means don’t try to take
credit for something you didn’t do. It only leads to trouble.
I have the willingness to put water in an ice cube tray and stick it
in the freezer. That’s it. After that, it’s all just talk,
inwardly or outwardly.
Near as I can tell, it’s like planting a seed. Some grow. Some
don’t. We don’t have the power to make things grow. Growth
IS the exercise of God’s power. We only have the power, so it
seems to me, to create conditions that facilitate the growth. And quite
frankly, I’m not so sure we even know exactly when we’re
doing that.
Sometimes, even with a certain degree of regularity, the Halbertcicles
have grown quite nicely when I have not been in, shall we say, the best
state of mind. In fact, some of my conversations have gone like:
Halbert: Hey Tom, some great Halbertcicles just grew. You should check
them out.
Tom: Been having a bad day?
It’s very humbling when this happens. I tend to feel rather foolish
for forgetting to fully embrace that I really do believe we are in God’s
good hands.
I do believe that faithfulness makes it safer for God to provide us
with miracles and unusual phenomenon. It is crucial to give God the
credit. One of the most important things we can do is humbly accept
and appreciate that we are in God’s good hands, that nothing,
and I mean NOTHING, happens on a physical level without the approval
of God’s loving and wise oversight. With or without Halbertcicles,
whether or not life is working out the way we think it should, still
we can trust that with God all things will (as in the future) and do
(as in right now) work together for good.
Of course, it can be very challenging to exercise faith in this way,
but the rewards are awesome and immediate.
There is a lot more to say on this topic. My first book, The Logic
of Love: Finding Faith Through the Heart-Mind Connection, directly addresses
the very reasonable assertion that some circumstances in life do not
on the surface indicate that there is a loving, all powerful God any
where around. Go to www.insightsout.com
